Remote Audio Quality Samples

We’re often asked about the quality of remote recordings.

The sound quality achieved through our remote recording sessions depends a lot how everyone is connected, and what type of microphone they use.

As a podcaster working with us, we’ll point you to some inexpensive gear options and coach you through tips for sounding your best, even when you can’t make it into the studio.

But what about your guests? Below are some examples of the range in sound quality you can expect from remote podcast guests — from best to worst (and note that we’ve applied some of our post-production magic to these to make them sound as good as possible):

USB Mics + Local Recording

In this example, both the host and the guest had USB mics. They recorded locally on their computers and sent us the files after (we also recorded on Zoom as a backup). This sounds the closest to studio recording, and it’s still the best option even without the extra step of local recording.

Wired Earpods

Both the host and the guest had wired apple earbuds with the mic built into the cord. Recorded via Zoom. We do not recommend wireless earbuds/earpods because the sound quality is reduced, and they’re prone to dropouts or battery issues.

Laptop Mic

Here the host is still on apple earbuds, but the guest is using their laptop mic. Laptop mics vary in quality quite a bit and pick up extraneous sounds like typing extremely well. Recorded via Zoom.

Phone

Cellphones or even landlines are at the bottom of our list for a reason. Sometimes it can sound surprisingly good, but the opposite is just as likely as this montage of four different phone calls shows.
